The Body Shop Most Wanted Wishlist!

Recently I bought some oils and beeswax to use in bath and make some balms. I was also looking for tea-tree oil but couldn’t find it so I turned to my fellow bloggers for help and they came up with some suggestions. The most common answer was The Body Shop.

Now, I’ve been to The Body Shop quite a few times but I always left empty handed because I just felt so overwhelmed by the variety that I couldn’t decide what I should buy. So, I was surfing (read: drooling on) The Body Shop’s website the other day in order to check out their tea-tree oil and I ended up making a wishlist of what other things I wanted from there. I read the product descriptions and googled up whatever I really thought I would love, for reviews and here is what I have put together.

Saturday Nail Tutorial: Hearts 3 Ways

Yesterday my phone was dead and I thought I won't be able to blog for days now but surprisingly the issue was fixed today and here is another nail tutorial for you butterflies.

All About Sunscreen and Garnier Ambre Solaire Face Protection Cream SPF50+ Review

Before we jump into today's review lets talk about sun protection and all that scientific jargon to understand better what exactly should we look for in a sunscreen.

There is this thing that the purpose of sunscreens is mainly to block a portion of UV rays and you still do tan by the production of melanin which is a pigment that your skin produces in order to protect you from those harmful rays which can cause sunburns, skin cancer and premature ageing. Well, I did some research and found out that some sunscreens can make you tan faster than the others and those usually are the ones with lower SPF. While it also depends on your skin type, duration and intensity of exposure, where you live, etc. If you have darker skin tone, you are more likely to tan easily but not burn easily and vice versa.

Types of UV Rays and Their Effects?

There are two categories of UV light that are considered in terms of sunscreen. UVA and UVB. UVA has more long-term damaging effects on the skin, like premature ageing. While UVB causes sunburn and can lead to skin cancer eventually.

What is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and it is believed to somewhat work like this; if somebody who burns easily in 10 minutes, wears a sunscreen with SPF 10, would be protected for up to 100 minutes. However, further researches have shown that it does not mean that SPF 30 gives double the protection than that offered by SPF 15 and all sunscreens must be re-applied every 2-3 hours. It is commonly said by dermatologists, especially here in Pakistan (near the equator) that anything lesser than SPF 30 isn't really worth it. Nonetheless, SPF 15 is still considered to be the least anybody should wear when heading out in the sun.

Does higher SPF provide better protection?

Well, it is true that the higher the SPF, the better the protection but roughly speaking, SPF 15 blocks 93% of the rays while SPF 30 blocks up to 97% and SPF 50 up to 98% and after SPF 50 it doesn't make much of a difference. Also, do keep in mind that higher SPF doesn't mean that you can stay in sun for longer.

Truck driver William McElligott's face is a graphic illustration of the damaging effects of the sun.
The left-hand side of the truck driver's face was exposed to the sun for 28 years, the other shaded in the cab.
In a nutshell

Sunblocks provide the best of protection from sun exposure and SPF 30 is probably the most ideal one for all skin types. People should apply sunblocks not only to their face and neck but also to ears and behind ears, on arms and on any other part of your body that would be exposed to prevent any long term harmful effects of UV Rays.

Now, coming to Garnier Ambre Solaire, I bought this affordable sunscreen a few months back as I ran out of my previous one and the reason that I particularly picked this was because it stated on the box that it is for 'Sun intolerant skin that burns easily'.

Well, I did try to wear it as regularly as I could during my semester and it seemed to work just fine though I did not re-apply it frequently as directed on the box for we sat in classrooms most of the time. Quite recently though, during the end of June and in the beginning of  July, I was usually out practising for my driver's license, in the blazing sun and I made sure to apply this all over generously. I must say that I noticed its effects better during this time. Starting with the protection, well, yes, I did not suffer any sunburns and only got minimal sun tans. What I really liked about this sunblock was the fact that it claimed to be non-greasy and it is infact non-greasy and hydrating though I feel safer to use my moisturiser before it anyway. As for the white marks, I'd say you can see a cast initially when you apply a generous amount which you should but it eventually sinks in so then there's no white cast. It did not break me out or irritated my skin so it is also safe to say that it suitable for sensitive skin. I did initially question it's high SPF as it was stereotyped to be bad but after my research I can say that the SPF 50+ that it has is rather good.

However, I felt tiny beads of sweat forming on my face when I had this on probably because sunblocks block pore or something in order to provide protection? They weren't visible but I don't recall it too well from my past sunblock experiences to have noticed it as much as I did with this but then I wasn't a blogger back then to note things that I now do. Therefore, it is probably not ideal to be worn under makeup, most sunblocks aren't, or you could do with a lesser amount of this. One thing that really put me off about this sunblock is its smell which can be sensed even after application. It took a lot of patience and time for me to get used to it but it is awful! Like seriously, I haven't smelt a sunblock this bad and this is something that sadly would keep me from repurchasing it.

Today we're doing loud neon pink bows against a pale background colour and all you need are your nail polishes and a tooth pick! :)

Saturday Nail Tutorial: Loud Bows

Step 1: Paint your nails baby blue (or any light pastel shade would do!)
Step 2: Roughly draw two little triangles meeting at the vertices as shown in the photo with a neon pink nail polish to make a small bow.
Step 3: Draw as many little bows as you wish to and fill them in. (optional): Fill the empty spaces on your nails with neon pink dots.
Step 4: Draw a big bow on your ring finger and outline it with a black nail polish for detailing if you wish to (it would look better without it in my opinion).
Step 5: Seal in your nail art with a top coat.

Diana of London Blush & Glow - Princess Pink 02 Review & Swatches

Diana of London Blush and Glow in shade Princess Pink 02 is a beautiful deep rose shade baked blush with fine gold shimmer in it which reflects light. The glitter particles are not chunky but could have been finer though it still doesn't make one look like a disco ball, so no worries. The shade Princess Pink 02 is ideal for warm skin tones. The packaging is not very sturdy and I had once dropped it which made me lose a lot of product as the slight dome on it broke T_T but the case itself did not and since it contained 12g of product I haven't hit pan on mine even after owning it for a couple of years.

While, the blush itself is fragrance free (skin friendly), very pigmented, smooth, silky and easy to apply though not very easy to blend if you pick up more product. With this blush you'll only need the tiniest of amount or you can end up looking a baboon's bottom. :P

On the whole, I love this blush for the healthy radiant glow that it provides and for it's wear time which Diana of London claims to be is over 6 hours and I do agree that I have never felt the need of touch-ups. This is more suitable for party looks than everyday makeup unless you decide to ditch au naturel and it looks more beautiful with time as it sets in. The only down side for me is that it has crazy fall-outs.

Sorry about the scary vein!

My Rating:

I got mine at Naheed but unfortunately there is very little information available regarding this product on internet and as I bought it a few years back, I don't remember at all how much I bought it for.

Diana of London Blush & Glow range has a total of 9 shades.

Artmatic U.S.A Eyelashes & MesmorEyes Eyelash Adhesive Review

Hey guys,

Just a quick false eyelashes and glue post today! :)

I had a close relative's wedding to attend in April and that was the first time I was to wear false eyelashes. Therefore, I decided to buy an inexpensive pair as putting on false eyelashes seemed a bit tricky and I didn't want to mess around with something costly.

I was looking through the lashes and glue section in Naheed and came across Artmatic U.S.A. which had a variety of lashes made of real hair available in different sizes and I settled for these, the reason being they aren't too big but still looked perfectly dramatic for weddings. Now, many people prefer to trim their falsies before putting them on but as these are pre-trimmed, I didn't really feel the need to either because they are very close to the length of my upper lash-line. I found these easy to wear with the help of tweezers and they didn't bother me once on. You probably should use extra glue on them even though they come pre-glued and  when wearing for the first time to ensure proper hold as false eyelashes do tend to come off at corners otherwise. I did and that's why I can't say how well these would have held on their own.

Artmatic eyelashes are reusable and I clean mine with some eye makeup remover on a q-tip to prevent any bacterial accumulation. This also helps to protect the lashes in case if there is mascara on them which tends to harden with time and can result in breaking off of lashes. To keep the shape of these lashes intact I replace them on the lash tray that it came with after each use. So far I have gotten 3 uses out of them.

Coming to the MesmorEyes Eyelash Adhesive, I had to purchase this to be handy for re-using those falsies. Given the price I think this is a big tube of lash glue and also is a very good product as it gives an amazing hold. All I do is sparingly apply it on the lash band of the falsies and only after about 30 second feels sticky enough to be worn. It dries clear and quickly and does not let those false lashes to budge until I gently tug them off myself.

Prices:
Artmatic Eyelashes: 80 or 90 PKR (Don't remember exactly!)
MesmorEyes Eyelash Adhesive: 60 PKR

As I mentioned these were my first pair of lashes and adhesive I don't have anything to compare these to, yet I must say that these proved to be a really good purchase.

You can see me wearing these here.

I'm not sure about the availability of these worldwide but you can find these at local superstores and online.
Check Farley&Co for MesmorEyes Eyelash Adhesive here.

Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals Review

Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals

I featured this product in my Summer Hauling: Whats & Whys? earlier this year and have really gotten into masks lately. There are a few that I have been testing for past few months. More recently though, Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals has been my go-to product after the long stressful university semester that I just went through less than a month ago and I am still stressing over a couple of things coming up in near future.

Initially I did not know what exactly to expect from this mask. What had caught my eye at the store was of course the 'dead sea minerals'. I did my label reading and decided to give it a go as it contains beneficial skin soothing ingredients.

Lets have a look at what Freeman claims and how to use:

Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals

After multiple uses my verdict is that this mask does indeed leave my skin feeling healthy, clean and fresh. What I found different and really like about this mask is that it almost does not crack on face unlike most clay masks and is surprisingly kind of flexible on skin due to that. This is a major pro for me as cracking of masks can cause wrinkles as long term effects which is something that makes me shudder!! I already have dry skin and we all know dry skin is more prone to getting all wrinkly with age. My skin got in better shape as summers approached and has been leaning more towards combo than dry so I found this helpful to keep excess oil at bay. Still, I have never used warm water to wash this off as its summer but you might get better results if you do.

Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals
The mask looks more blue than sea green in real!
Even though this mask is supposed to suit all skin types I'm not sure if I would like to use it in winters as just about anything can make dry skin more dry. I would however be testing the Freeman Hydrating Mask With Goji Berry then so expect a review on that later this year! ;)

This is somewhat how you look after applying Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals :P
Overall, I believe this product is a skin treat but there was still one let down for me. Even though it smells really soothing in the tube, you can't really sense it once applied which sadly means you do not experience the 'relaxing aroma therapy' that it is supposed to provide.

Looking forward to try out more Freeman products. :)

My Rating:

I got my tube of Freeman Anti-Stress Mask With Dead Sea Minerals at Imtiaz Super Market for only 290 PKR and it is available at all leading stores nationwide. For more details, info and store locator in your country and area, you can visit Freeman's website here.

Feel free to suggest me more Freeman Masks that you have tried and love! X

Vintage Necklaces From Daraz Unboxing

You might be aware that I am usually very skeptical about online shopping as it's hard for me to trust online sellers in every way and things aren't always exactly the same as they seem in the photos. However, I recently got a chance to shop online at daraz.p and this was my second purchase online. Coincidently enough, the first time I had shopped, was jewellery from Artel and this time again I bought jewellery but from 100 Degreez on Daraz.

Vintage Necklaces From Daraz Unboxing
Daraz Parcel*

So I was going through their new arrivals and this multi-hinged Owl Pendant caught my eye. I had seen it previously featured online somewhere and had quite liked it. There were a number of combos available, and I liked this one the most. Silver Owl and the Pair of Birds. This owl is more popular in bronze, but I am a silver's gal so chose this one. You might be able to spot the owl one on Etsy shops and I have seen some local online jewellery sellers have it too but of course they are not as reliable as Daraz. The silver owl and this combo is not available on daraz anymore though. You can find Bronze Owl and these Pair of Birds in separate combos there.

Lets peek into my parcel:

Vintage Necklaces From Daraz Unboxing

I was really pleased with daraz's service. As soon as I ordered, I received a confirmation email along with a text and call. They told me I'd receive my parcel in a week's time, but the best part was my order arrived the very next day. I received a text earlier  that day which had delivery timing, and it actually arrived almost 2 hours in advance!! You should better stay at home all day when you receive their text. :P

Pair of Birds

Daraz sent me two forms in the parcel, one was the Invoice, and other was a Returns form. They do Free returns within 7 days if you are not satisfied with your purchase except for jewellery and watches due to their delicate nature. I am content with the quality of my owl pendant but I have to say that the Pair of Birds one looks more golden in photos and is a bit dull in real but then it makes a very good vintage necklace!

Invoice and Returns Form
Invoice and Returns Form

However, there are some things that I'd still like to mention as positive feedback to Daraz. Starting with what you see when you go to their website is "Free delivery available (in Pakistan)" written on a small truck on the top left corner, but it is not linked to any conditions page, and you might end up thinking it's free for all orders in Pakistan. They do have a "shipping and returns" page linked towards the end of the home page but not everybody might see that. I did not. I got to know that they had free shipping on orders above 1500 PKR only when I had placed my order. 150 PKR shipping on orders of a lesser amount. No big deal there, in fact that is a quite reasonable shipping amount but still these things should be more transparent in my opinion. I didn't have to pay it though because I had a 1000 PKR voucher that I had received from Daraz, and you get 500 PKR off when you register so it got adjusted in that amount.

I know I didn't make a very good use of the whole amount but then again I found that even though there are some really good brands listed, those brands actually have put up a very limited variety and quantity. Everything just goes out of stock super quick. Most items that I looked through, stated "Only 2-3 left". It kind of like forces you to make an impulse purchase. This is not something that I would blame Daraz for though, rather the brands collaborating with Daraz should work on this.

Apart from that, I am a satisfied customer, and I really like their hassle free delivery service. I definitely would be making loads of purchases in future and I have gotten my friends hooked too! :)
